Type MC Aluminum Armored Cable

Classic Wire & Cable stocks heavy-duty Type MC aluminum armored cable designed for commercial and industrial electrical installations. Our inventory covers 3-conductor aluminum MC cable with ground and 4-conductor aluminum MC cable with ground in both XHHW-2 600 V and THHN/THWN-2 aluminum configurations. Orders placed before 11 a.m. local time ship the same day from our regional warehouse network.

Understanding Type MC Aluminum Armored Cable

Type MC cable is a factory-assembled wiring method covered under NEC Article 330. It combines insulated conductors, an equipment grounding conductor, and a protective metal armor jacket into a single, ready-to-install assembly engineered for demanding job sites.

Interlocked Armor Construction and UL 1569 Standards

Interlocked armor is manufactured from aluminum strips wound in a continuous spiral around the conductor assembly, meeting UL 1569 standards for mechanical protection, crush resistance, and structural listing integrity.

The aluminum armor also serves as a supplemental fault current path, and per NEC Article 330, every assembly includes a dedicated equipment grounding conductor as standard. Every reel of Type MC cable Classic Wire stocks ships with a bare aluminum ground wire built into the construction, meeting code requirements as manufactured, not as an added step.

Contractor Efficiency & Labor-Saving Advantages

Interlocked armor MC cable eliminates time-consuming pipe bending, pipe threading, and wire pulling required by traditional conduit runs. Electricians simply cut the assembly to length using a rotary armor cutter, strip the armor back, and make terminations. On large commercial builds with hundreds of circuit drops, this streamlined workflow significantly cuts labor hours.

This factory-assembled design also simplifies logistics for distributors and their contractor customers. Because the armor, conductors, and ground wire ship as one integrated cable, there’s no need to source and match separate components before a job starts, which keeps large commercial builds moving on schedule.

In-Stock Conductor Configurations

Classic Wire maintains deep inventory across the primary multi-conductor configurations required by electrical contractors:

  • 3-conductor with ground. Industry standard for three-phase branch circuits and feeder runs where a neutral is unnecessary.
  • 4-conductor with ground. Engineered for mixed-load panels and distribution circuits requiring a neutral conductor alongside three-phase legs.

Both configurations include a bare aluminum equipment grounding conductor sized per NEC requirements.

XHHW-2 and THHN/THWN-2 Aluminum Conductors

Selecting the right insulation profile depends on environmental exposure and temperature requirements:

  • XHHW-2 insulation (600V). Uses cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) rated at 90ยฐC for both wet and dry locations. Preferred for feeder runs installed in damp or high-moisture environments.
  • THHN/THWN-2 insulation. Features PVC with a protective nylon jacket, rated 90ยฐC in dry environments and 75ยฐC in wet locations. Widely specified for general commercial branch circuits.

Both insulation types are available in our aluminum building wire stock as well, for projects that use open wiring methods alongside MC.

Voltage Ratings & Commercial Applications

All MC cable we stock is rated 600 V. Aluminum conductor ampacity follows NEC Table 310.16. At 75ยฐC, the rating used for most terminations, a 2 AWG aluminum conductor is rated for 90 A, while a 350 kcmil conductor is rated for 310 A.

Typical applications for 3-conductor aluminum MC cable with ground and 4-conductor aluminum MC cable with ground include:

  • Commercial lighting and branch circuit power distribution
  • Industrial control panel and sub-panel feeders
  • Multi-family residential electrical distribution systems
  • Data centers, logistics hubs, and warehouse power infrastructure
  • Commercial building retrofits where rigid conduit installation is impractical

The combination of aluminum conductors and interlocked armor makes this cable a cost-effective choice for large feeder runs, where aluminum offers significant weight and cost savings over copper.

Wholesale Distribution & Inventory Depth

Electrical contractors require immediate material availability when job sites go live. To support wholesale distributors, Classic Wire maintains deep stock in fast-moving MC cable configurations across our regional fulfillment hubs.

Fulfillment, Precision Cutting, and Same-Day Shipping

As a wholesale metal-clad cable supplier focused exclusively on electrical distributors, Classic Wire maintains in-depth inventory across our warehouse network in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania. If you’re looking for a reliable metal-clad armored cable distributor, we stock the sizes and configurations that move on active commercial and industrial projects. Orders placed before 11 a.m. local time ship the same day.

We also offer custom wire cutting so you can pass job-specific lengths directly to your contractor customers. For procurement managers sourcing for active projects, that means fewer leftover reels on the job site and less waste at closeout.
