Classic Wire & Cable (CWC) is a leading supplier of high-quality, UL-listed medium voltage cables. With an extensive network of NEMRA-affiliated representatives and a sales team with experience in manufacturing and distribution, we can meet the unique demands of the commercial, industrial, utility, residential, and renewable energy markets.
Product Overview: What Is Medium Voltage Cable?
Medium-voltage (MV) power cables are rated between 5 kV to 35 kV. They are designed for the transmission of electricity across moderate distances, acting as a crucial link between low-voltage distribution networks and high-voltage transmission lines.
The following characteristics make it possible for MV cables to withstand the unique challenges of harsh operating conditions and high power loads:
Durability. An outer jacket made of polyethylene or PVC offers excellent durability in extreme environments.
Metallic shielding. To reduce interference and shield against electrical stress.
Superior conductivity. Copper conductor material, with a larger cross-section for high power loads.
At CWC, we offer medium-voltage cables specifically engineered to deliver the highest level of efficiency and reliability for applications across a broad range of industries.
Our PowerGuard® 5-35 kV cables can be used in wet or dry locations to distribute single- or three-phase medium-voltage power. These durable cables withstand sun exposure and can be installed inside ducts or directly buried. Cables sized 1/0 AWG or higher are marked “FOR CT USE,” meaning they are approved for use in cable trays.
UL-listed PowerGuard® MV cables deliver enhanced operational safety and long-term durability for use in data centers and industrial facilities. They are engineered to deliver consistent performance in critical electrical infrastructure, ensuring long-lasting performance.
Construction. A single conductor cable with true-triple extrusion and black PVC jacket for maximum durability. The dry-cured system consists of thermosetting semiconducting insulation and conductor shielding featuring high dielectric strength EPR insulation and flat copper tape.
Conductor. Compact concentric stranded copper.
Conductor shield. Extruded semiconducting thermosetting XLPE shield bonded to the insulation and free of stripping from the conductor.
Insulation. Extruded EPR with 100% or 133% insulation level.
Insulation shield. Extruded semiconducting thermosetting XLPE shield with precise insulation adhesion, providing a necessary balance between ease of stripping and electrical integrity.
Metallic shield. Uncoated, flat 5 mil thick copper tape applied with at least 25% overlap.
Outer jacket. A PVC jacket is extruded over the copper tape shield, meeting all physical regulatory requirements.
Critical Applications & Reliability
Selecting a power cable with the correct voltage rating is vital for safety, compliance, reliability, and performance in the following applications:
Electrical systems
Oil and gas operations
Overhead and underground power transmission
Power distribution
Renewable energy systems (solar, wind)
